The “bachelorette party,” which was originally known as a “bridesmaid’s tea” in the early years, is an event that is planned around the bride-to-be in honor of her upcoming wedding.
While it was initially supposed to be a very prim & proper afternoon tea, today’s modern bachelorette parties can be anything from a girls night out, a spa day, a night on the town, or just a gathering of the bride’s closest girlfriends and female family members for an intimate evening of female bonding.
Bachelorette parties are usually hosted by a bridesmaid and/or other female members of the bridal party. Whether it’s a formal dinner or a themed party (such as an adult toy party, pajama party, etc.), it’s important to keep in mind that all events should be conducted in a safe environment and are not meant to put anyone into an uncomfortable situation. These parties are meant to be fun for all while honoring the guest of honor – the bride!!
While the bachelorette party is NEVER hosted by the bride-to-be herself, it is appropriate to include her in the planning of one. Typically, the costs of the party are incurred by the hostess. Though, it is common for other party participants to share in the costs, particularly in today’s economy.
Another important thing to consider is the timing of one’s event. It’s never appropriate to host a bachelorette party on the eve of the bride’s wedding day. As a courtesy to the bride, it’s best to plan a party in her honor at least 3-4 weeks prior to her big day. After all, you don’t want the bride walking down the aisle with a hangover from the previous night’s events. That wouldn’t be good.
When considering the timing and place for the bachelorette party, remember one important thing…..you must ALWAYS put the bride-to-be before yourself. On her wedding day, this event is all about her.
And, if she’s like most bride-to-be’s, she’s already a bundle of stress and nerves in hopes that her wedding day goes off without a hitch. And, as her bachelorette party hostess, it’s your job to make sure that she is there to relax and have a great time.
